Crave culture? Take in a live performance at local theatres, or go to the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival or nearby Brevard Music Center to hear and see a symphony, concert or musical. Watch the fireworks and mingle with friends over food and drink at Sapphire Valley’s annual Symphony Under the Stars on every Independence Day along with other community events for Highlands and Cashiers throughout the year. Try one of our many renowned restaurants or sample fine wines and experience Southern hospitality at its finest. Surrounded by some 20,000 acres of the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forest, Highlands, Cashiers and the surrounding areas offer plenty of recreation with over 200 miles of hiking and horse trails in the area. For the biker there is the annual Tour de Cashiers, which features events from the Family Fun Ride to the 100 mile endurance Century ride with total climbing of over 10,000’. Maybe 18 holes on a beautiful sunny day is more your style, there are 13 golf courses to test your skills.
Whiteside Mountain is the centerpiece of Highlands and Cashiers and is the playground for hikers, hang gliders, wildlife watchers and the endangered Peregrine Falcon. Whiteside Mountain has the highest vertical drop east of the Mississippi River. Yellow Mountain is the highest peak around Cashiers and stands at 5,127 feet above sea level.

Lake Glenville, Lake Toxaway and the many surrounding streams and waterfalls attract the serious fishermen, the avid outdoorsmen and the ever increasing nature lovers. The Highlands-Cashiers Plateau has many diverse species of flora and fauna which are found nowhere else in the world. The Highlands Biological Station, an interinstitutional center of the University of North Carolina, promotes research and education of the biological uniqueness of the area.
