Brevard is a small town. The first settlers came here between 1765 and 1775 in search of religious and political freedom according to historians. They tilled the soil, fished and hunted, and paid little attention to trade or traffic for almost 100 years. When Transylvania County was formed in 1861, a committee was named to select a site for a county seat. Those men - James Siniard, Joshua Bryant, George Orr, FW Johnstone, Colonel Joseph Hamilton and Alexander Henry - knew in advance what their town would be called even though it was not to be incorporated until 6 years later. The act of legislature creating the county specified that the town be named Brevard for Dr. Ephraim Brevard, revolutionary war soldier and member of the Mecklenburg Committee. B.C. Lankford, L.S. Gash, and Alex England donated the 50 acres for the town site. James Killian, W.P. Poor and Charles Porter were named to a committee to lay off lots and offer them at public sale. Surrounded by the lofty peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Brevard has come to be known as "Land of Waterfalls".
The town became the gateway to one of Eastern America's outstanding natural playgrounds in 1920 when more than 90,000 acres of forestlands were designated as Pisgah National Forest and Game Reserve. Clear mountains streams provide over 200 miles of trout fishing in the country in addition to lakes stocked with bream, bass, and crappie. Part of its abundant wildlife is Brevard's unique White Squirrel.
Known as the "Land of the Waterfalls," Brevard is home to the 85 foot "Looking Glass" Falls. In Transylvania County, the twin falls of Connestee are each over 100 feet high and High Falls and White Water are 125 foot classics.
